Christmas Gifting

Back to blog
November 13, 2019

It’s nearly that time of year …

Parties, gifts to think about and Christmas day to sort out. With all the preparations in the lead up to Christmas, finding presents can become another stress that bites into our time and adds to our ‘to do’ list.

Gift giving

Make it Count

As we get closer to the magic day, it can become too easy to simply pick something up in passing as we troll the store isles, without giving much thought as to the recipient or whether they will actually value the present. The reality however, is that we have spent time and money picking out the gift. As such we should try to make it special, to make choices worthy of our effort, expense and the person we are gifting.

It may take a little extra time, but we are more likely to actually present something that is appreciated, treasured and enjoyed.  A special ‘something’ that is more personal and shows we truly care.

Gifts contribute to the ‘stuff’ in our lives. So let’s try to give something meaningful, rather than an item which merely allows us to tick-off our long list and ends up taking up space; adding to the clutter of our lives.

A useful philosophy to keep in mind when buying gifts…

“Have nothing … that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful”.

William Morris

Meaningful Gifting

With Christmas fast approaching we can take away some of the stress by planning ahead. Drawing up the to do list, noting the friends and family we want to buy for and thinking about their preferences and hobbies to decide what they might like.

It may be, that the best gift would be to simply roll up our sleeves and help someone out with our time, so a homemade voucher may be all you need. For the creative types, something handmade may make their day special or perhaps baking Christmas treats is more your style.

Shop local

If these aren’t your thing, there are unique gifts to suit every person and budget, to be found amongst our local creative talent. Present ideas range from leather goods, furniture, children’s toys and body products to wine and hampers, with everything in between.

There are so many Australian creatives making/producing beautiful and unusual gifts you simply won’t find in the chain stores. Not only will you find something original, you’ll be supporting a small business.

The first place to check out are the local Markets which abound at this time of year, with most stocking Christmas goodies. For a great day out this weekend or in the days to Christmas visit a couple of these or your local Farmer’s Market, there are many others and you’re sure to find one in your area –

  • Perth Makers Market
  • Kalamunda Artisan market
  • EtsyWA
  • Made on the Left
  • Upmarket

If time, young children or convenience is an issue then go online and check out other Australian talent –

  • Made it
  • Etsy Australia

For more feel good vibes go country this Christmas and support rural creatives doing it tough – (unfortunately WA is not represented) –

  • Go Country
  • Buyfromthebush

And if you’re after something different again, why not consider giving an experience to remember.

A boat trip down the river or to Rotto, a horse and carriage tour of the Swan Valley, tickets to the cinema? Explore Perth and discover hidden gems with ‘Let’s Roam’, a scavenger hunt with a difference, for all ages. Or perhaps a gourmet picnic basket for two in a favourite location, the options are only limited by your imagination…..

A gift aims to show you care, so keep the Christmas spirit alive and enjoy the act of finding that special something for the ones you love.

Happy gifting. We hope you receive something that shows how much you too, are cared for.

Do you have a go-to place for your Christmas presents?
